- Keep it away from neighbours' windows — especially bedroom windows. A condenser facing your own garden is heard by you; one aimed at next door's bedroom is heard by them, all night.
- Avoid narrow side passages and enclosed courtyards. Hard parallel walls bounce and amplify sound. The gap between two terraced houses is often the worst spot on the property.
- Distance is free soundproofing. Every extra metre from the boundary helps noticeably. If you have a choice of positions, the one furthest from next door usually wins.

The second is the backstop: statutory nuisance. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, councils investigate noise complaints, and if a noise amounts to an unreasonable interference with someone's enjoyment of their home, the council can require it to stop. Two things are worth understanding about this. There's no single decibel number that makes a noise legal or illegal — councils judge it in context: how loud, how often, what time of day, and what the area is normally like. And in practice, a correctly installed modern condenser running in quiet mode shouldn't get anywhere near the threshold. Formal cases involving domestic AC are unusual, and the ones that do happen tend to involve a badly sited or faulty unit that was never put right.
