Why Bromley homes struggle in warm weather
Much of Bromley grew up between the wars along the railway lines — semis and detached houses through Petts Wood, Orpington and the quieter roads off Bromley Common, with older Victorian and Edwardian terraces towards Beckenham and Penge. They are comfortable houses for most of the year, but they were built to hold heat in, not to shed it.
The rooms that suffer will be familiar to anyone here: loft conversions sitting directly under the tiles, rear extensions with big glazed doors onto the garden, and south or west-facing bedrooms that take the sun all afternoon. Because so much of the borough is semis and detached houses with garden space, there is usually somewhere sensible to put an outdoor unit.
