Why Cheshire homes get uncomfortably warm
The large detached homes around Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Prestbury were often built or extended with plenty of glass — south-facing windows, garden rooms, open-plan kitchen extensions — and on a still summer afternoon those rooms hold on to heat long after the sun has moved round. Loft conversions and upstairs bedrooms are usually the first spaces people give up on.
The rest of the county has different problems. Warrington's newer estates are built airtight and well insulated, which works for you in January and against you in a heatwave, because heat that gets in cannot easily get back out. Macclesfield's older terraces, built for the silk workers, and Chester's Victorian brick streets have their own quirks — solid walls that soak up warmth all day and let it go overnight, and wiring that predates any thought of air conditioning.
Either way, a modern split system is worth knowing about. It is a reversible air-to-air heat pump, so it cools in summer and heats in winter, and running costs are usually lower than people expect. What to check before you get quotes in Cheshire
- Conservation areas and listed buildings. Chester's historic centre and villages like Prestbury have plenty of both. An outdoor unit on an external wall may need permission — check with your council before anyone drills anything.

- Flats and leasehold. Apartments in Chester or Warrington town centres will almost always need the freeholder's consent before anything goes on an outside wall.
