Why comfort in Cornwall is a different question
Truro, Falmouth and Newquay rarely see the sustained heat that drives air conditioning demand in the South East, and we won't pretend otherwise. What Cornwall does get is sticky, humid spells rolling in off the sea, and a housing stock that copes badly in particular places: loft conversions and attic bedrooms under slate roofs, south-facing holiday lets that bake in the few properly warm weeks, and small coastal windows that don't move much air.
The stronger argument here is winter. Plenty of Cornish homes have granite or solid walls — fishermen's cottages in Falmouth, older terraces around Truro, exposed farmhouses inland — and they are hard to insulate and expensive to keep warm. A modern split system is a reversible air-to-air heat pump: the same unit that cools in August heats efficiently in January, putting out several units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses. One properly local point: salt air is hard on outdoor units. If you're near the coast, ask any installer about corrosion-protected or coastal-grade kit, and about siting the unit out of direct spray. Good installers treat that as a routine conversation; it's a warning sign if they wave it away.
Planning, wiring and consent to check first
- Cornwall has a lot of conservation areas and listed buildings, from harbour villages to town centres. Check with Cornwall Council before fixing anything to an outside wall — don't assume it's fine.
- Older cottages sometimes need electrical work before a unit can go in, such as a consumer unit upgrade. Any decent installer will check this as part of the survey rather than springing it on you later.
- Flats and leasehold properties — including the many coastal apartment conversions — almost always need the freeholder's consent.
