Why heating, not cooling, leads the argument in Glasgow
A modern split-system air conditioner is a reversible air-to-air heat pump. Run in heating mode it delivers several units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses — a very different proposition from a plug-in electric heater, which gives you one for one. In a climate like Glasgow's, where the heating season is long and genuinely hot days are few, that efficiency is the real story. Cooling still matters more than people expect, mind. Top-floor tenement flats and well-insulated new-builds can get uncomfortably warm on the few properly hot days, and a split handles that too. But we would never tell a Glaswegian they need air conditioning for the weather. You don't. You might well want an efficient heater that happens to cool.
Sandstone tenements, cottage flats and older wiring
Glasgow's housing is distinctive: blonde and red sandstone tenements, four-in-a-block cottage flats, inter-war semis in places like Knightswood and Paisley's west end, post-war stock in Clydebank. Three practical things follow.
- Tenement flats involve shared decisions. The outdoor unit usually goes on an external wall, and in a tenement that wall is common property. Expect to need agreement from your factor or fellow owners before anything is fixed to it, and if the building sits in a conservation area, speak to the council before any external unit goes up. Check first; don't assume.
- Older electrics often need attention. Pre-war homes frequently need wiring or consumer-unit work before a split can go in. A good installer checks this at survey rather than springing it on you afterwards.

One thing not to plan around: heat pump grant schemes have generally been aimed at air-to-water systems that replace a boiler, not air-to-air units like these. Check what's currently on offer before you count on any funding.
