Why Haringey homes get so hot
Most of the borough's housing is Victorian or Edwardian — terraces around Tottenham and Harringay, and the Edwardian streets of Crouch End and Muswell Hill. Solid brick walls soak up heat all day and let it go slowly all evening, and the loft conversions so many of these houses have gained are usually the hottest rooms in the house come summer. Top-floor flats in converted terraces have the same problem with fewer options for fixing it.
These homes take modern air conditioning better than people expect. A wall-mounted split system needs one outdoor unit and a short pipe run, and it is also a reversible air-to-air heat pump — it heats as well as cools, which is genuinely useful in a draughty terrace in January, not just during a heatwave. Portable units help a little and cost a lot to run; a properly installed split is quieter, cheaper to run and actually holds a room at temperature. One caveat worth knowing: air-to-air systems are not covered by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which applies to air-to-water heat pumps only. Conservation areas, electrics and leasehold
Parts of the west of the borough — Muswell Hill and Crouch End in particular — include conservation areas, so the placement of an outdoor unit needs checking with Haringey Council before anything is fixed to an external wall. Don't assume it's a problem; do assume it needs a conversation first.
Older wiring matters too. Some period homes need their consumer unit checked or upgraded before a split system goes in — a qualified electrician can tell you in a single visit. And if you own a flat in a converted terrace, which is common across the borough, you will almost always need the freeholder's consent before an outdoor unit goes up.
