Why Hillingdon homes get hot
Much of the borough was built between the wars, as the railway pushed out through Ruislip, Ickenham and Eastcote and the semis followed. Metroland houses are comfortable most of the year, but they were designed to hold warmth, not shed it: brick construction, south-facing bays, and often a loft conversion that becomes the hottest room in the house by mid-July.
The standard advice is to open a window overnight. In the south of the borough — Hayes, Harlington, West Drayton — that can mean letting in aircraft noise along with the breeze, which is why bedroom cooling comes up so often here. The newer flats near Hayes & Harlington and West Drayton stations have a different problem: plenty of glazing and limited through-ventilation, so heat builds up with nowhere to go.
One genuine advantage of the local stock: gardens and side access. Most semis in Ruislip or Uxbridge have a sensible spot for an outdoor unit, which keeps installation simpler than in a tight terrace.
Costs, electrics and permissions

- Some parts of the borough are conservation areas. Check with Hillingdon council before mounting an external unit; don't assume it's fine because a neighbour has one.
