Why Lambeth homes get so hot
So much of the borough is Victorian — the terraces off Clapham Common, the streets around Brixton Hill, the long runs of Streatham. Solid brick walls soak up heat all day and release it through the evening, which is why a bedroom can feel hotter at 11pm than it did mid-afternoon. Converted flats have it hardest. A big share of Lambeth's houses have been split into two or three flats, and the top-floor flat sits directly under the roof. If that's you, you already know: fans move hot air around, they don't remove it.
A modern split system does remove it. And because it's a reversible air-to-air heat pump, the same unit heats in winter far more cheaply than plug-in electric heaters — for a flat on electric heating, that's often the stronger argument.
What to check before anyone quotes you
- Leasehold consent. In a converted or purpose-built flat you'll almost certainly need the freeholder's written permission before an outdoor unit goes on the wall. Start that conversation early — it's usually the slowest part of the whole job.
- Conservation areas. Lambeth has a number of them, and placing an external unit in one needs checking with the council before anyone drills. Don't assume either way.
- Electrics. Victorian-era homes often have older consumer units, and some need upgrading before a split system goes in. An electrical condition report will tell you where you stand.
