Checks worth doing before you get quotes
- Electrics first. Older terraces and semis often have dated consumer units, and some homes need electrical work before a system can go in. An electrician's condition report will tell you where you stand.
- Conservation areas and listed buildings. Leicester and several of the county's towns and villages have conservation areas. If you're in one, or the building is listed, check with the council before anything is fixed to an outside wall — the rules vary street by street, so don't assume.
- Flats and conversions. If you're leasehold, which is common in city-centre flats and converted buildings, mounting an outdoor unit almost always needs the freeholder's written consent.
One thing to be straight about: government heat pump grants apply to air-to-water systems, not the air-to-air units described here. If a salesperson implies a grant covers your air conditioning, it doesn't.
