Why North Yorkshire homes get uncomfortable — in both directions
Nobody would call North Yorkshire hot country. Summers are milder than the south-east, and most evenings cool off on their own. But the housing stock has a habit of holding on to heat once it arrives. Harrogate's Victorian spa villas — solid stone, high ceilings, big south-facing bays around the Stray — can take days to shed a warm spell. York's terraces inside the walls, and the loft conversions squeezed into so many of them, are often the warmest rooms in the house by teatime. The quieter argument, though, is winter. A modern split system is a reversible air-to-air heat pump: it cools in July and heats in January, giving back several units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses. In a county with a long heating season, that arguably matters more than the cooling. Worth knowing upfront: air-to-air systems don't qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which covers air-to-water heat pumps only.
Listed buildings, conservation areas and older wiring
This matters more in North Yorkshire than almost anywhere. York is heavily listed and much of the centre sits within conservation areas, so before any external unit goes on a wall, check with the council. The same goes for large parts of Harrogate. We won't tell you it will be fine, because it depends on your exact building — we'll tell you to check first. A few other things that catch people out:
- Flats and leasehold properties almost always need the freeholder's consent before anything goes on an outside wall.
- Older wiring sometimes needs upgrading before an installer will fit a system — better to find that out early than on installation day.
