Why Redbridge homes get uncomfortably warm
Most of the borough was built in two big waves. The Edwardian streets around Wanstead and South Woodford came first — bay windows, high ceilings, solid brick that soaks up heat all day and lets it back out at night. Then the interwar semis filled in Ilford, Gants Hill and Barkingside as London pushed east: early cavity walls, big south-facing bedrooms, and — very common round here — loft conversions that turn into the hottest room in the house by mid-afternoon. Sitting on the built-up eastern edge of London, these streets don't cool down on summer nights as quickly as you'd hope.
The upside of Redbridge's stock is the gardens. Most semis and terraces here have somewhere sensible to site an outdoor unit — off the back wall, away from bedroom windows and the neighbours. That makes installation more straightforward than in much of inner London. What to check before you get quotes
- Conservation areas. Some streets in Wanstead and Woodford fall within conservation areas. That doesn't rule anything out, but it's worth a quick check with Redbridge Council before fixing an external unit anywhere visible from the street — a back-wall position is usually the easier conversation.

- Flats and conversions. If you're in a flat around Ilford town centre or a converted house, you'll almost always need freeholder consent for an outdoor unit. Get that in writing before anyone quotes you.
One thing worth knowing: a modern split system is a reversible air-to-air heat pump. It heats as well as cools, and it heats far more efficiently than a plug-in electric heater — though it isn't covered by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which only applies to air-to-water systems.
