Why South Yorkshire homes get uncomfortably hot
Much of the housing stock across Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster is Victorian and Edwardian terracing — stone-fronted rows climbing Sheffield's hillsides, brick terraces through Rotherham and Doncaster. Solid walls soak up heat all day and let it go slowly through the evening, so bedrooms are often at their worst just as you are trying to sleep. Sheffield's hills add a quirk of their own: plenty of homes sit on slopes that take full sun all afternoon, and attic bedrooms in loft conversions catch the worst of it.
A modern split-system air conditioner deals with this directly, and it is worth knowing what it actually is: a reversible air-to-air heat pump. It cools in summer and heats in winter, and in heating mode it puts out considerably more heat than the electricity it draws — which matters in a county where winter is still the longer season. If there is one room you struggle to heat affordably, that is often where a single unit earns its keep. One honesty note: air-to-air units do not qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which covers air-to-water heat pumps instead.
The practical bits for older terraces
We would rather not print prices here that drift out of date. Our air conditioning cost guide sets out realistic UK ranges and what pushes a job up or down. What we can say is that older terraces often need some groundwork first:
- Homes with original or dated wiring may need their electrics checked, and some older fuse boards need upgrading before an installer will connect a unit — our guide on whether your home electrics can handle air conditioning explains what to look for.
- If your home is listed or sits in a conservation area, check with your local council before planning any external unit.
- Flats and leasehold properties almost always need the freeholder's consent.
