Air conditioning in West Yorkshire — from stone terraces to Leeds flats

West Yorkshire summers are short, but if you've spent a July night in the attic bedroom of a stone terrace in Huddersfield, or a glass-fronted flat above the streets of Leeds, you'll know short doesn't mean comfortable. Here's what cooling — and cheap winter heating — actually looks like for homes across LS, BD, WF, HD and HX.

Why West Yorkshire homes get hotter than the weather suggests

Nobody would call Huddersfield the Mediterranean. But the housing stock here is unusually good at trapping heat. Millstone grit terraces — the ones climbing the hillsides around Halifax and the Colne Valley — have thick solid walls that soak up warmth over a hot week and let it back out slowly at night, exactly when you're trying to sleep. Attic bedroom conversions under dark slate roofs are usually the worst room in the house.

Then there's Leeds, with its big city-centre apartment market. Many of those flats are single-aspect: lots of glazing, windows that barely open, no cross-ventilation and nowhere for the heat to go. Leeds and Bradford also still have back-to-back terraces, with openings on one side only, which face the same problem.

On cost, we're not going to put a number on this page, because it genuinely depends on the room, the walls and the wiring. Our cost guide walks through what pushes a quote up or down, so you can judge whatever an installer tells you.

One thing worth knowing: a modern split system is a reversible air-to-air heat pump, so it heats as well as cools, and it does so cheaply compared with plug-in heaters — useful in a hard-to-heat stone room through a Pennine winter. Just don't count on a grant: government heat pump schemes cover air-to-water systems, not air-to-air.

Consent and wiring: the checks that matter here

Three things trip people up locally:

  • Conservation areas and listed buildings. West Yorkshire has plenty — Saltaire most famously, plus village and town centres from Ilkley to Holmfirth. If you're in one, check with your council before fixing an external unit to the building. Don't assume either way.
  • Flats and leasehold. In a Leeds or Bradford apartment you'll almost always need freeholder or management company consent for an external unit. It's often the slowest step, so start early.
  • Older electrics. Victorian and Edwardian terraces sometimes need the consumer unit upgraded before an installer will fit anything, and it's worth getting the wiring inspected first. Our electrics guide explains what to check.
