Air conditioning grants & funding in the UK (2026): what you can and can’t get

Let’s save you the search. If you want a grant to help pay for home air conditioning, there isn’t one. That’s the honest headline — and understanding why tells you everything about the schemes that do exist.

The honest headline first

There is no UK government grant for standard air conditioning. The units that cool your rooms in a heatwave — technically “air-to-air” systems — sit outside every major funding scheme. Plenty of pages online imply otherwise, usually to get you onto a form. We’d rather just tell you straight: the grants are real, but they’re aimed somewhere else. Here’s where.

What the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) actually covers

The headline scheme is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers £7,500 toward an air-to-water air source heat pump (or a ground source heat pump), in England and Wales. The catch for anyone wanting cooling: it funds heat pumps that heat your central-heating water — radiators, underfloor, hot-water cylinder. Air-to-air systems are excluded, even though they’re heat pumps by any engineering definition. It’s a genuine policy quirk: the same technology, feeding air instead of water, gets nothing. The VAT angle — honestly

There’s a separate relief worth understanding: 0% VAT currently applies to certain energy-saving materials installed in homes — including air source heat pumps — until 31 March 2027. Whether a reversible air-to-air AC unit qualifies for that zero rate is a genuine grey area. We won’t tell you it definitely does, because it isn’t settled — many installers treat straight air conditioning as standard-rated (20%). Other schemes, briefly and honestly

You may have seen ECO4 and Warm Homes–type schemes mentioned. These are aimed at low-income and vulnerable households, and they focus on insulation and replacing inefficient heating — not comfort cooling. Air conditioning doesn’t qualify, and it would be dishonest to imply it does. Devolved nations run their own programmes too: Scotland has interest-free loans and grants via Home Energy Scotland, and Wales and Northern Ireland have their own schemes with different rules. So what’s the smart move?

It comes down to what you’re actually trying to solve. If your real goal is cutting bills and carbon by replacing a gas boiler wholesale, air-to-water may unlock the £7,500 grant — that’s a strong reason to look at it seriously. But if what you want is comfort and genuine cooling — cold bedrooms in July, quick, room-by-room control — air-to-air is unmatched, and you’ll be paying for it yourself.
