Air conditioning that heats too: use less gas without replacing your boiler

UK summers are getting warmer, so a lot of us are thinking about cooling for the first time. Here's the bit that surprises people: the same unit that cools your house in August is also one of the most efficient heaters you can run — and it can quietly shave money off your gas bill in the shoulder months, without touching your boiler.

Cooling is becoming a want-anyway, not a luxury

The Met Office is clear about the direction of travel: UK summers are trending hotter and drier, and heatwaves are getting more frequent and more intense. In July 2022 the UK passed 40°C for the first time on record. None of that is a one-off — it's the pattern. So more of us are reaching the same conclusion: some form of cooling is going from "nice to have" to "the upstairs bedrooms are unbearable three weeks a year, let's just sort it." The bit most people miss — it's a heater in reverse

A home air conditioner isn't really an "air conditioner" in the old sense. It's a reversible air-to-air heat pump. In summer it moves heat out of your room; flick it to heating mode and it runs the same process backwards, pulling warmth from the outside air (yes, even when it's cold out) and delivering it indoors. Because it's moving heat rather than burning fuel to make it, it's remarkably efficient: roughly 3.5–5 units of heat per unit of electricity — that's a SCOP of 3.5–5. It also warms a room in minutes rather than the slow build-up you get from radiators, which is exactly what you want on a chilly October morning.

Less gas, without a boiler rip-out

Here's the headline. This unit heats the rooms you actually use, electrically and efficiently — so on a mild spring or autumn day, you can warm the living room or home office with the AC instead of firing up the whole central heating system. Your gas boiler works less, especially through the shoulder months (roughly September–November and March–May) when you don't really need the whole house warm, just the room you're sitting in. To be completely clear: this does not replace your boiler and it isn't a rip-out. It works alongside your existing gas heating, taking some of the load off it. That's the whole appeal — it's a low-friction change. The honest catch

We'd be doing you a disservice to pretend this is free money, so here's the straight version:

  • It runs on electricity, not gas — and electricity costs more per unit. Whether heating a room this way is actually cheaper depends on the gap between your electricity and gas unit rates. At a SCOP of 3.5–5 it's usually competitive with, and often beats, firing the boiler for a single room, but you should check it against your own tariff.   • It does not do your hot water, and it does not do whole-home wet heating through radiators. It heats the air in the rooms it's installed in — nothing more.
  • For the whole house in deep winter, mains gas central heating still generally wins. When it's genuinely cold and you want every room warm plus hot water on tap, keep the boiler doing that job.

So think of it as a targeted tool: cooling in summer, efficient top-up heating for the rooms you use in the shoulder seasons, and a boiler that clocks fewer hours as a result.
